The theme of this meeting is “North Central Texas Birding”. To quote our keynote speaker, Warren Pulich, in the introduction to his book, “The Birds of North Central Texas”:
North Central Texas is extremely important to the birds of Texas, although many persons are not aware of its significance. The area represents a large segment of a major ecosystem and is a vital region for birds in migration, where “eastern” species often mingle with “western” species.
The region consists of four vegetational areas including Post Oak Savannah, Blackland Prairies, Cross Timbers and Prairies, and Rolling Plains. Per Mr. Pulich, the counties that encompass North Central Texas include: Archer, Baylor, Bosque, Clay, Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hill, Hood, Hunt, Jack, Johnson, Kaufman, Montague, Navarro, Palo Pinto, Parker, Rains, Rockwall, Somervell, Stephens, Tarrant, Throckmorton, Van Zandt, Wichita, Wilbarger, Wise, and Young. We have organized a number of field trips to showcase the birds and counties of North Central Texas, and have included trips to two adjacent counties: Erath and Freestone.
Regional birds of interest that may be present: 5 species of geese; 19 species of ducks including Cinnamon Teal, Greater Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Hooded and Red-breasted Merganser, Mottled Duck; 3 species of loons including Common, Pacific, Red-throated; 3 species of grebes including Pied-billed, Horned, Eared; 15 species of raptors including Bald Eagle, Ferruginous Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Golden Eagle, Crested Caracara, Merlin, Peregrine and Prairie Falcon; 5 species of owls; 8 species of woodpeckers; 8 species of wrens; 17 species of sparrows including Harris’s, Le Conte’s, Black-throated, Rufous-crowned.
